Standing guidance
FEMA's Ready.gov advises that after an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days, with your own food, water and supplies.

We're not saying something will happen. We're saying the people whose job it is to plan for emergencies are planning. So should your family.

The gap

Plan for 72 hours. Most homes can't do one night.

Ready.gov says that after an emergency, you may need to get by on your own for several days. Be honest: could your home handle the first night without the grid?

No light

Phone flashlights drain the battery you need for calls and updates.

No first aid

A cut in the dark is harder to handle when the bandages are "somewhere in the house."

No way to stay warm

In a winter outage, the house gets colder every hour the heat is off.

The family behind every kit

Built on one rule: grab it in the dark.

In Vietnam, Walt Dombrowski's pack was always ready, everything in the same place so he could grab it without thinking. Back home in Scranton, after Hurricane Agnes flooded the valley in 1972, he saw families forced to leave in minutes with nothing ready. So in 1976, he and his wife Linda started packing grab-and-go bags at their kitchen table. The Dombrowski family has been at it ever since.

What that means for your Holdout 72 kit

Everything has its place

Every item sits in the same spot, so you find it in seconds, even in the dark.

Ready the moment you need it

47 essentials packed in one bag. Hang it by the door, keep it in the car, grab it and go.

Built for the first 72 hours

All 47 pieces of the Holdout 72 Kit laid out on a kitchen table

Walt believed every family deserved to be ready. That's still the idea: get every home ready for the first 72 hours, without the guesswork.

Questions

Straight answers

How fast will my kit arrive?

Kits ship from a warehouse in the US and are delivered in 3–5 business days. You get a tracking number by email as soon as your order ships. Shipping is a flat $9.99 per order, however many kits you buy.

What's inside?

47 pieces in one MOLLE shoulder pouch: a zoom LED flashlight, a fire starter, a first aid pouch, an emergency foil blanket, a rain poncho, multi-tool pliers, a folding knife, a compass, a whistle, a paracord bracelet, a wire saw, a fishing kit and more. The full list is in the What's inside section above.

Does it include food or water?

No. The kit covers light, first aid, warmth, fire, tools and signaling. Ready.gov suggests storing at least one gallon of water per person per day, plus food that doesn't need cooking. Add any prescription medicines your family needs.

Is it legal to ship and own the knife?

The kit includes a folding pocket knife with a locking blade, plus multi-tool pliers. Folding knives like this are legal to own in most of the US, but knife laws vary by state and city, especially for carrying one. Please check your local rules. Don't pack the knife, pliers or tactical pen in carry-on luggage when you fly.

Is one kit enough for my family?

No. Each kit is packed for one person: one foil blanket, one rain poncho and one set of tools and first aid. For a household, plan on one kit per person. That's why the kits come in packs for 1, 2 or 3 people.

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants a simple, ready-to-go basic kit: families, renters, commuters, new parents and anyone who drives in winter. Some people also keep an extra kit in the car.

Is it safe around kids and older family members?

The kit contains a knife, a fire starter and other sharp tools, so store it out of children's reach and let an adult handle the tools. At about 2 lb, it's light enough for most older family members to carry.

What if my kit arrives damaged or incomplete?

Send us a message through our contact form within 7 days of delivery with your order number and a photo. We'll send a replacement or refund you.

Can I return it?

Yes. You can return an unused, complete kit in its original packaging within 14 days of delivery. Message us through our contact form first and we'll send return instructions. Return shipping is paid by the customer. Full details are in our Refund policy.

Who runs Holdout Supply?

Holdout Supply is run by the Dombrowski family of Scranton, Pennsylvania, a veteran family that has been packing grab-and-go bags since 1976.

Are you connected to the government or the military?

No. Holdout Supply is an independent company. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, FEMA, or any government agency. The news we link to is for information only.

How should I store it?

Keep it somewhere cool and dry that you can reach fast: by the front door, in a hall closet or in the car trunk. Check it every six months, test the flashlight and replace anything you've used.
